Crowdsourcing high-potential leaders

What if we tried crowdsourcing our high-potential future leaders?

The narrative is becoming all too familiar: Boomers retiring in droves, Millennials aren’t ready to lead–resulting in a leadership gap that threatens our future economic prosperity.

Crowdsourcing is a sourcing model in which individuals or organizations obtain goods and services, including ideas and finances, from a large, relatively open and often rapidly-evolving group of internet users; it divides work between participants to achieve a cumulative result. The word crowdsourcing itself is a mashup of “crowd” and “outsourcing,” coined in 2005.*

Here’s the thing. The future leaders we so desperately need are everywhere. We just need to identify them and develop their leadership traits. What if we asked all of our employees these three questions to zero in on people who are most apt to be high-potential leaders according to their peers?

  1. Who do you think would make a great leader in this company?
  2. Why?
  3. What is the most important capability this person would need to develop in order to be an effective leader?

I wonder if you’d be surprised by any of the recommendations? I wonder if the same names would keep popping up? I wonder if you’d learn some cool things that employees have done to distinguish themselves as having leadership potential … cool things you might not have thought of? How many of those cool things (i.e. behaviors, capabilities and qualities) align with the future vision and core values of the company?

At a minimum, this process would create an opportunity to provide some really meaningful recognition for the people who were recommended by their peers, and ideally, you could identify a short list of really incredible high potential employees who deserve some extra attention and development.
